Interim Executive Director

Rob is KidSafe’s Interim Executive Director, following a previous role as KidSafe’s Manager of Programming. Rob is a registered social worker with experience in a range of helping organizations such as Vancouver Board of Education, QMUNITY, BCCDC, Southern Learning Centre, and Families SA. His skills include program management, community development, facilitation, and anti-oppression work. He is also an avid volunteer, giving time to organizations such as Gordon Neighbourhood House, The Gathering Place, Out For Kicks, and more. His motivation is to see a fairer world with fewer systemic barriers to healthy and fruitful lives for all, and his role at KidSafe is an ideal opportunity to pursue this vision.

He brings degrees in social work, and professional writing and communication. Originally from Australia, he has lived in Vancouver since 2010, after two years of world travel. When Rob is not working or volunteering, he can be found producing visual arts and creative writing, sweating on the soccer field or volleyball court, baking, or asking people if he can pat their dogs.

Joseph Abai

Joseph comes to KidSafe in his role as KidLInk Program Coordinator with five years experience as an Activity Leader and volunteer with both The Boys and Girls Club of South Coast B.C. and KidSafe. He is a recent UBC graduate finishing school with a Bachelors of Kinesiology. His history with Kidsafe started as a child when he was a member of the Nightingale Site in the late 90’s. In tandem with his role at KidSafe he continues to mentor youth and provide academic support via the Rogers Raising the Grade program. He enjoys reading, hiking, photography and camping!

Jennifer Allen brings two decades of experience working in non-profit administration to her role as KidSafe’s Administrative Coordinator. She has been working with KidSafe since 2009. She is a CPB-Certified Professional Bookkeeper, and earned a Bachelor of Arts at Simon Fraser University focusing in Business, Psychology and Philosophy.

Jennifer has always been dedicated to working with projects and organizations that tackle the root causes of problems in our communities and world. Her experiences before joining KidSafe include working for a collaborative family law association of lawyers, psychologists, social workers, and financial professionals; working for accounting firms, in natural foods, and for 11 years as Executive Director of a wildlife protection society.

In her spare time, Jennifer enjoys doing zumba, singing in her church choir, drinking green smoothies, and spending time with family and friends.

David Palmer

Development & Communications Coordinator

David brings several years experience in fundraising and grant writing at Barnardo’s, one of the largest and oldest children’s charities in the UK. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Human Geography with Cultural Studies and a Masters degree in Gender studies from the University of Westminster and Birkbeck College, University of London respectively.

He arrived in Vancouver off the back of a year long bicycle journey which took him from England, across Europe and Asia to Thailand, stopping in Laos on the way to teach English to local children. Outside of the office David tries to be outside as much as possible, exploring Vancouver and the rest of BC by bike.

With a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing from UBC, Danielle has been with KidSafe since 2012. She has held previous positions as BC Development Officer with Evergreen, a national not-for-profit environmental organization, and as Manager of Fund Development with Special Olympics BC. During her time with Special Olympics, she was proud to have been chosen as one of six Mission Staff members travelling with Team BC to the 2008 National Winter Games in Quebec City. Danielle also has a keen interest in music, and worked as a Client Services Manager with a local digital music company, Hip Digital Media.

In her spare time, Danielle enjoys playing guitar, skiing, and volunteering as a mentor with Urban Native Youth Association.

Coordinator of Programs & Community Engagement

Helen Schikkerling is joining the KidSafe team with a diverse background of working with youth – first as an Early Childhood Educator, and then as a Child and Youth Worker. After receiving her Diploma in Early Childhood Education from Langara College, Helen began working with a local non-profit, CISV, where she experienced working with a greater range of youth. Inspired by the impact that this work had on her, Helen went back to school to receive her Bachelors Degree is Child and Youth Care Counselling at Douglas College.

As a member of the Grandview Woodland Community, Helen feels very passionate about the work that KidSafe does and is eager to contribute to the creation of more safe spaces for children in the neighbourhood! Having immigrated from South Africa at a young age, Helen has a unique understanding of the challenges that immigrant and minority families face, and is very proud to be supporting an organization that supports children who need a little extra.

In her spare time Helen can be found walking the Seawall, crafting in a park, or reading a book under a tree.

Christina Vasilopoulos

Manager of Programming

Christina Vasilopoulos joins KidSafe as the Manager of Programming. Christina was first introduced to KidSafe 4 years ago when she was working for the Boys & Girls Club of South Coast BC as an Activity Leader. Over the years, Christina has transitioned from Activity Leader to Child Support Worker, to Coordinator of Programming; thus stepping into the Manager of Programming role, helping to oversee all of the KidSafe sites, was a natural fit.

Christina graduated from the University of British Columbia with a Bachelors in Psychology. Throughout her studies she gained experience helping in a wide range of community organizations such as, Girl Guides of Canada, The Ronald Mcdonald House, as well as mentoring UBC students through her role as a Peer Wellness Coach.

She is passionate about providing safe spaces for vulnerable children and believes that all children deserve the same opportunities. She is proud to join the KidSafe team and is committed to their vision.

In her spare time, Christina enjoys swimming, practising yoga and walking her dog!

Janelle Zwarych

Prior to joining KidSafe as Development Coordinator Janelle worked in Real Estate, ran her own successful small business in Vancouver, and volunteered in the music therapy program of a local retirement home. Janelle is a graduate of The University of Saskatchewan where she obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. She has recently shifted the focus of her career from being an entrepreneur to her true passion; working within the non-profit sector and doing advocacy work for children.

In Janelle’s spare time you can catch her singing with and directing a local choir, on the softball field with her team that is far from the best in the league but always wins the spirit award, or keeping in touch with her nieces and nephews.

Julianna brings a decade of experience working with non-profit organizations in areas such as office administration, administrative operations, volunteer management and marketing to her role as KidSafe’s Administrative Assistant. She has been with the KidSafe team since October 2011.

A graduate from Capilano University’s Access to Work Program, she has also provided support to other Vancouver & national non-profits such as Arts Umbrella, Learning Through the Arts, a division of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, Sarah McLachlan School of Music, and Made in BC – Dance on Tour.

In between her time working with the organization, she also volunteers with the Harmony Arts Festival, an annual 10 day summer festival in West Vancouver as an Office Volunteer and focusing on improving her overall health & wellness.

Gerhard has been part of KidSafe since 2010. With a background in organizational development, programming, fundraising, education, strategic planning, and people management, he has held positions such as the Regional Manager for Learning Through the Arts, the Director of Programming at Arts Umbrella in Vancouver and the Supervisor for Community and Alternate Programs at the Vancouver Board of Education. Gerhard holds a Masters in Leadership from Royal Roads University and a Bachelors in Fine Arts (Theatre Performance). Gerhard serves as the President of the Professional and Administrative Staff Association at the Vancouver Board of Education.

In Gerhard’s spare time he is an avid curler, yoga enthusiast and dancer.
