The KidSafe Project Society raised more than $96,000 in its 2010 annual CIBC Wood Gundy at Bentall Caring for KidSafe Golf Tournament. KidSafe’s largest corporate donor, CIBC Wood Gundy at Bentall Caring for Kids Fund, matched donations to the sum of $45,000. The volunteer-run event was sold out for the first time.
"We are delighted to have so many community members and corporate sponsors participate in this year's golf tournament fundraiser," said Judy Gale, Co-Chair, KidSafe Project Society. “This is significant for an organization such as ours working to meet the funding needs for programs for local Vancouver children in inner-city neighbourhoods. In troubled economic times, more children and families than ever, depend on KidSafe. With the support of our donors and community sponsors we are able to continue providing our much needed programs, so at-risk children from six elementary schools will receive the nutritious food, safety, learning activities, and fun they deserve during school breaks.”
KidSafe provides the children in its programs with experiences they wouldn’t have been able to access otherwise. Among the special experiences provided to KidSafe children are activities donated by auction supporters at the golf tournament: trips to Splashdown water park, a winter skating party, a day kayaking, helmets and locks to go with donated bicycles, and picnic lunches.
KidSafe programs include:
• The KidSafe Young Leaders program offers pre-employment skills to the pre-teens (at their request) in addition to sports and out-trips; it provides first aid, babysitting and Food Safe courses, resume writing and interviewing skills and involvement in community service. This program is critical for youth who are navigating adolescence in uncertain circumstances.
• KidSafe’s healthy meals include a complete day’s nutrition. Healthy breakfasts, lunches and snacks are prepared by cooks on-site.
• Recognizing the particular vulnerability of pre-teen girls, an after-school program for girls (“Girlz Club”) is provided at three of the six KidSafe schools, helping girls to develop self-confidence.
• Recreational activities expose the children to sports and activities they have not experienced before like snow shoeing, bowling and golf.
