About KidSafe

The Vancouver School Board, in collaboration with a core group of supporters, established KidSafe in 1993 in response to a community tragedy that highlighted the crucial need for a safe space where children could go when schools were closed.

Supporting Children in Need

Our Mission: to provide a nurturing, caring environment for children who need it most.

Our Vision: a city where all children and youth feel seen, heard and have a place to thrive.

The reality for many children in Vancouver is that school breaks are a time of heightened uncertainty. KidSafe has operated during winter, spring and summer breaks, and after school, providing children facing adversity with safety, educational programming, place-based field trips, delicious and nutritious meals, unlimited snacks, and more!

Programs have encompassed the five key assets essential to their overall health and well-being, as outlined in the Middle Years Development Instrument developed by UBC Human Early Learning Partnership (HELP):

  • Supportive relationships with adults at home, at school, and in the community

  • A sense of belonging and friendship with peers

  • Good health habits

  • Participation in meaningful activities

  • Positive experiences at home, in school, and in the community
